International investors tracking this market often watch the Hang Seng Index, which tracks the largest companies traded on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. This index accounts for about 40% of the exchange's total market capitalization. Since its inception in July of 1964, the index has moved from 100 points to more than 26,000 points, as of Sep 2021.

Key Takeaways

  • The Hang Seng Index consists of 50 of the largest and most liquid companies on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, similar to the S&P 500 in the U.S.
  • The Hang Seng Index underlies many exchange-traded funds (ETFs), or you can access it through American depository receipts (ADRs).
  • Investing in Hong Kong ETFs and ADRs can be risky due to political changes from mainland China and the increase in state-run businesses.

The Hang Seng Index

The Hang Seng Index is a stock market index consisting of 50 of the largest and most liquid companies listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. This accounts for 40% of its total market capitalization. Like the S&P 500 in the United States, the index is designed to mimic the overall performance of the stock market at any given time.

The Hang Seng Index provides international investors with a quick glance into the health of Hong Kong's stock market, which can be difficult to see when looking at individual equities. The global nature of Hong Kong's economy also means that the Hang Seng serves as a proxy for the wider Asian market—especially China's stock market, which is often mispriced due to capital restrictions.

International investors should keep in mind, however, that the index is 41.93% weighted toward financials, 20.93% weighted toward real estate, and 12.35% weighted toward consumer cyclicals, creating some concentration risks.

Our TWB Hang Seng M1 Traders Testimonies

Rules are only but part of the overall ecosystem
What else are there?

1) Guts: Accept that there will be winnings and losses and breeze through it all without putting emotions into it. Many became too engaged on catching the one big winning trade but we all know such occurrence is probably going to occur once or twice a month.

A successful trader is about having success spread out over many trades, not hinges on that one trade. That’s what our TWB Hang Seng Traders are beginning to see that manifesting.

2) Money Power: One must detach Fear of losing from the game

Hang Seng Index is a volatile market hence taking numerous small winning trades to cover while waiting for that big one, at the same time building up your ammunitions to fire when the moment comes.

Both with the same rules, but one using excess funds not needed for day to day; vs another whom use funds that cannot be afforded to lose

3) Analytical observations: Know the characteristics and timing, and don’t bend the Rules. Once you grasp it all, one should take control and ensure trading to be done when the Rules call for it.

Finally, in trading, TWB Academy accept that there will be areas that we could have fallen short of expectations but in reaction, we did do continual review on the past and tweak it to improve and strive to live up to your expectations and trust.

We hope you accord a little forbearance while we work to bridge this gap. This is a never-ending quest for improvement, to which we will spare no efforts to ensure you get the best you deserve.
